Terms of use

Draft status: this text is under legal review. It describes the platform as built on 8 September 2026. Values in square brackets are not yet confirmed. It is not the binding version.

These terms cover the Olympiads app on iOS, Android, macOS, Windows and Linux, the olympiad websites you sign in to (auth.main-team.org, gf.main-team.org and each olympiad's own my. site), and this site, hub.main-team.org.

They are the "terms and conditions of Main Team Organisation GmbH (based in Germany) and Main Team Organization LLC (based in the United States)" that you accept when you register. Your contract is with Main Team Organisation GmbH. The LLC's role in the contract — to be confirmed.

Our Privacy policy explains what we collect. It is part of these terms.

Who can use it

  • The app is for students. Supervisor, partner, parent and administrator accounts are refused at sign-in with a message saying so; they use the websites.
  • If you are a child under the age at which the law where you live lets you agree to terms like these, a parent or guardian must agree for you. By registering, you confirm that this is the case. Age threshold — to be confirmed by legal review.
  • A school may register its students. The school then confirms it has the right to do so.

Your account

  • Give true details. Your name cannot be changed after registration — the form warns you before you confirm — because it is the name that appears on your certificates.
  • One person, one account. You may use it on several devices; My devices shows them all and lets you sign any of them out.
  • Keep your password to yourself. The registration summary is the last time it is shown; note it down.
  • If you sign in with Google, Google's terms also apply to that sign-in.
  • Tell us at once if you think someone else is using your account.

Sitting an exam

You register for an exam from the app or the website. Each exam has a window in which you may start, shown in your local time, and a fixed length once started. For some exams a late start costs you time; the exam's own page says which rule applies.

Once an exam begins:

  • it cannot be paused or restarted — not for a dropped camera, not for a lost connection. Your answers are sent as you give them, and the clock keeps running;
  • when the time is up, the exam is handed in automatically;
  • an administrator may grant you extra time; if they do, the app tells you.

An exam may carry its own rules, written by the olympiad. The app shows them before you start.

Supervised exams and recording

Some exams are supervised. For these:

  1. Recording is a condition of taking the exam. The app records your camera and, on a computer, your screen. On a phone or tablet the app pins itself to the screen instead of recording it. In the app there is no way to sit a supervised exam without recording. Whether the website keeps its "continue without recording" option, and what it means for the result — to be confirmed. If you do not want to be recorded, do not start the exam.
  2. Recording starts when you set up, on the readiness screen, before the paper opens, and stops when you hand in. The rules screen tells you so.
  3. Recording carries on in your absence. If your connection drops, the video waits on your device and is sent later. Do not close the app after handing in until it says the recording has been sent.
  4. A phone you pair by QR code as a second camera records for that exam only.

The recording and the exam log are reviewed by Main Team. What is in the log is listed in the Privacy policy.

What counts as misconduct

During a supervised exam you must:

  • stay in the exam. Leaving the exam window, switching to another app or tab, and opening the exam in a second tab or browser are all recorded;
  • use one display. On a computer a second display must be disconnected before the exam can start; connecting one during the exam is recorded;
  • use a real camera. Virtual cameras, camera loopback software and similar tools are not accepted; on a desktop the app will not offer one, and a machine with only virtual cameras cannot start;
  • not run the exam inside a virtual machine or under remote-control software. The app checks for both and records what it finds;
  • not take screenshots or share your screen. Where the operating system allows it, the app turns screenshots off; where it does not, it records them;
  • not paste answers in from elsewhere. Pasting is recorded;
  • not get help from another person, and not share the questions with anyone during or after the exam;
  • not cover, point away or disable a camera. Where the app lets you skip a camera, the skip is recorded.

Main Team reviews recordings and logs after the exam. If a review finds that a rule was broken, consequences — to be confirmed by Main Team: for example, the result may be withheld or annulled, and repeated misconduct may close the account. How to appeal a decision, and within what time — to be confirmed.

Fees and refunds

  • Some exams and the Grand Final carry a fee. The amount is shown before you pay.
  • Payment is made through Stripe. On the web and the desktop app you pay on Stripe's checkout page; in the mobile apps only the Grand Final fee can be paid, and an unpaid exam shows Payment pending until you pay it on the website.
  • Payments are marked non-refundable at checkout, and Grand Final tickets cannot be cancelled. Exceptions — for example a cancelled exam, a technical failure on our side, or statutory withdrawal rights for consumers in the EU — to be confirmed by legal review.
  • A transaction fee is added as a separate line at checkout; the percentage is shown there. Whether prices shown include VAT — to be confirmed.

Exam papers, results and your work

  • Exam papers, questions, answer keys, reports, certificates, the app and the websites belong to Main Team or its licensors. You may use them only to sit your exams. Do not copy, photograph, share or publish questions, during or after the exam.
  • Your answers and challenge submissions remain yours. You give Main Team the right to store, grade, review and publish them as part of the olympiad's results and archives. Any further use of submissions — to be confirmed.
  • Certificates carry your name and can be verified by anyone who has the certificate's link.
  • The desktop app ships with open-source software. The notices are inside the app (THIRD-PARTY-FFMPEG.md).

Availability

We work to keep the platform up on exam days, but we do not guarantee that it will always be available or free of errors. Current availability is published at hub.main-team.org/status. If an exam session fails because of a fault on our side, we will reschedule it or refund the fee — to be confirmed.

You are responsible for your own device, camera, power and internet connection. The app tells you before the exam what it needs; test it the day before.

Our liability, in plain words

  • We are liable without limit for damage we cause on purpose or by gross negligence, and for injury to life, body or health.
  • For ordinary negligence we are liable only for breaking a duty that the contract depends on, and only up to the damage that was foreseeable when you registered.
  • We are not liable for a lost exam attempt caused by your device, your connection, or a rule you broke.
  • Nothing here limits rights you have as a consumer that cannot be limited by contract.

Exact wording — to be confirmed by legal review under German law.

Ending the agreement

You can delete your account from the account settings on the website, unless a paid registration exists on it. We may close an account that breaks these terms, after telling you why. Results already issued stay in the olympiad's record.

Changes to these terms

We may change these terms. We will post the new version here with a new date, and tell you by e-mail or in the app before a change that affects you takes effect. If you keep using the platform after that date, the new terms apply.

Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of Germany — to be confirmed. If you are a consumer, the mandatory consumer-protection rules of the country you live in still apply. Place of jurisdiction — to be confirmed.
